I've been playing and studying chess since late March this year, and am still trying to improve. My rating as of now (standard live) sits around 800-900, but I want to get better.

I've been doing the tactics trainer, reading books, and reviewing my old games, but I feel as if I'm not improving. Is it like this for everyone? How do I continue to improve?

IM Danny Rensch's live session videos are entertaining and educational.  Nice way to take a break from "serious" study.  Everyone seems to say tactics study is the shortest path to improvement and they are probably right.  It can be hard to jump right into the tactics trainer though if you genuinely are unfamiliar with basic tactics.  Great courses on all levels of tactics over at the chess mentor.  Hit those until you can 100% the lessons (during review) and then come back and hit the tactics trainer.  You'll get better.

Casey is my nephew and he just smoked me! Stop helping him! Just kidding of course, welcome aboard Casey! You have lots of tools for learning chess here. Don't worry about rating so much yet and practice what you learn in the videos and books.

Thanks for all of the suggestions! I've mainly been watching the videos on here and tactics trainer every chance I get. Haven't been playing online as much as I'd like to, but I found a few buddies here that play.

@capt: Haha, I guess I got lucky! I'm not really too good at correspondence, for some reason I feel more comfortable live or over the board. Do you and Mike still play?

@eddy: I'm 22, and I hope so! Just found out that there's a chess team for my branch of service (crazy!) and I might be interested.
