for example this guy literally is blocking people who disagree with him in a thread… why can you even do that?  I’ve seen people get blocked by mods but this guy is trolling and can block those calling him out? Guess I’m staying off these forums have been on a lot better ones on other sites kinda sad

Also to anyone talking crap and having an ego about a rating online should probably have a winning record 😂😂 kind of laughable to have a big ego over a board game you have a losing record at

kangusmangus

Literally though for a game about wit there’s a ton of bunk on these forums

Faraday_mate

Guy probably wanted serious answers from real chess players. Not children nitpicking his posts.

kangusmangus

Bruh dude is a broken record with a losing record and I’m totally older than him… dude acts like a college kid… the post was about what is drawing new people into chess… new people answer and dude doesn’t accept the answer… clearly a troll just like you ya clown

Faraday_mate

Go get yourself a rating of at least a 1000 in rapid, maybe after that we will consider talking with you.

kangusmangus

Difference between me and that guy is I won’t block you from commenting 😂… and the point of this post is these forums are pretty stupid if you can just block anyone whenever… should be up to mods but whatever… and last I checked a serious chess player with a losing record is a loser… prob shouldn’t be trying to gatekeep

kangusmangus

Dude you’re missing the point so bad just like the guy’s post… IQ doesn’t equal chess skill I guess

kind of laughable how someone below 1000 is trying to make fun of someone's chess when the criticized is 2000+

Never has. Who told you otherwise?

InfiniteBlunders

It's true that the people who block anyone who disagrees are (mainly just) trolls

but just leave that to them.

Read the original thread if you want… dude has an ego about a losing chess record… I’ll admit I suck at chess I just started playing… But the things I’m good at I’m actually good at and sure as hell don’t have an ego about a losing record like the OP…

You got your feelings hurt by being blocked online? You must be new. Maybe the internet isn’t for you.

Mods don't block, they mute or ban. Blocking allows an op to have some semblance of control over their thread.  How they use or abuse it is up to them.

Staying off the forums may be a good idea if you find that hard to accept.

OP of that thread is a troll…. And I’m calling out the fact you can block people to create more trolling is stupid… never been in a forum like this.. And the gate keeping by that guy is hilarious to me 😂…

If you created the thread, you can block anyone you want to block. However, if you block people willy-nilly, it will become obvious that you never took any Dale Carnegie courses...

dude blocks you on first comment that doesn’t go his way then blows up the thread… just saying terrible forum setup… prob should put that up to mods not OP’s

I mean that’s a pretty illogical setup in my opinion…

This has been the case for over a decade. I first hung out in this place when I was just a kid trying to learn chess in the early 2010s. I asked genuine questions, I think. I got a few genuine answers, I also got some people flaming me, some people arguing with each other, some people trolling etc. I don't know if it's different from any other massive forum on the internet, maybe it's a little worse but you just have to have realistic expectations.

When I go back and read some of those things it's conflicting; on one hand, often I cringe at myself because reacting to people being negative was hard for me. I'm 24 now, this was 8-11 years ago and I was in my early-to-mid teens. So I have to remember to give myself a break for some of those things looking back. On the other hand it's cool to look at the accounts of some of the people who were particularly bothersome/rude to me, and see that some of them got banned for fair play or whatever, others never achieved a good rating, others are still here but are kinda punchlines etc.

Anyway there are definitely good discussions to be found here. It's not the norm but it can happen. Whatever the issue is wrt someone blocking you for disagreeing, yeah that happens from time to time, don't worry about it, random people on the internet will do whatever they want to feel "right" in an argument. It got way easier for me to exist on the internet when I gained enough perspective to stop caring that much about each interaction. But that took a long time

I've pretty much learned just to laugh at them. It helps keep my diaphragm in shape.
