Timing out on purpose

My question is why are people letting the timer run out in a lost position? Wouldn't it been easier for both players if the losing player simply resigned? The way that I see it it's a way of disrespecting your opponent when you leave him waiting for the win. Usually I've been thinking its something kids do when their ego has been hurt in the game, but I've noticed this occurs often among the 40 years + players as well. Isn't chess a game of class? Does someone earn anything on losing on time instead of resignation?

There is no bonus for timing out over resigning or losing except frustrating your opponent. However, some nasty people leave the game, wait a while for you to hopefully start another game or something, then come back and move so that you time out instead.

frustruation from losing ... their way of getting back at you. stupid but I guess some people get pleasure out of it.

The human brain are fascinating. There are some mental issues being revealed during a game of chess against a random opponent at Internet. I guess Dr Phil would have his hands full if playing chess at this site then:P

Lagomorph

Just block anyone who does this.

There is a big difference between taking your time in an equal position, and deliberately stalling in a position that is hopelessly lost.

If you don't like the former, you shouldn't play slow chess.

KnightsRuleTheGame

I have absolutely no problem with long time control on games, I play slow games OTB all the time so I totally respects that people are spending their time as they wish. If that means wasting 30 mins at the ten first moves then so be it:) what I'm referring too in this thread is a lost position where some dorks refuse to resign (note: I never ask for them to resign as I see it as rude too do so) leaving their opponent waiting for 30 mins or so. As mentioned above you can't simply leave the game either due to some snakes that moves and leaves you loosing on time... It's just so frustrating that's all!

Because their mommy didn't teach them any manners.

I accidentally had my time run out on my first CC game.  I was in a horrible position(down a rook and a bishop), except I didn't want to resign yet(I know, very bad of me).  I lost track of my time, because it was my first CC game and I wanted to wait until the last second to make my move.  Anyways, lesson learned.

KnightsRuleTheGame

Why're you waiting until the last second to make your move if the game is already hopelessly lost? Is there something more annoying than people waiting to the time almost run out before they move, especially I if you just got the one game on going. No, that's just too dumb and you deserved losing the game. Not to be rude or anything that's just my opinion...

Happens in CC games. I recently got a win on time because my opponent just let the 3 days run out after he got into a bad position rather than trying to play on (only down one piece) or resigning. I would have played on, at least for a while. I think it's rude (unless of course, you never know, some real-life event took them away).

I happens. Easier in CC, you can start a new game. I sympathize with folks who are stuck not being able to start a new online game.

I just had a premium member use all his vacation time and THEN time out in a losing game!

Irontiger

I read on some forum that timeouts award less rating points than checkmate in bullet games. Not sure though.

Otherwise, yes, it's just poor manners.

It's happened to me a lot on Live Chess. Then I tried one Online Chess game, the game went on smoothly for the first day. Then I forgot to log in any of the next days and lost it. Online chess is not for me. I want to be able to play a game to the end from the same get go.

I've had a number of games where it looks like it's the opponent's move...and their screen shows it's my move!  If we don't draw the game...I usually lose to time even though I can't move.  What gives with that??

edoneill

Thanks for bringing up this subject KnightsRuleTheGame - I prefer to play live chess and the last 2 games I've played I have had this happen (in CC). One game I had to wait over 30 mins to be given the win.

I would suggest some kind of 'dead man's handle' where either player can press a button if they suspect the opponent is deliberately timing themselves out. The opponent then gets a message on their screen which they have to click in a certain amount of time to avoid losing. This would catch any 'bad losers' who have left their computer and are crying in the corner. You would only get 1 of these 'dead man's handles' per game so as to prevent abuse.

It would be interesting to hear what people think about this, chess.com are you listening?

I don’t think that’s the best idea. The player could have simply switched to reading articles on another tab and will click the DMH when it pops up. The other problem is that you could end up punishing players that are taking bathroom breaks during games with long time controls.

If I suspect someone is timing out I just start doing something else on my computer. It really doesn’t happen that often.

I really hate when people do that. I play everyday all day and I'm becoming a much stronger player. I'm currently rated 1265 after 260 games. I'm waiting on two games where I absolutely crushed two +1400 rated players. Literally in both games there is one more move and I checkmate them both. I know they must be salty . its sad.

My question is will my rating go up and there's go down like it rightfully should? I mean will my rating go up as if we finished with me checkmating their patzer a$$es?

Please let me know!

KnightsRuleTheGame

Dear Skillcrazy it doesn't matter how you win as long as you win. If you checkmate them or win on time it's all the same for your rating.

It's the annoying part of it that ticks me of nothing else.

Since I made this thread I've been playing a lot more of the Online Chess than the Live chess due to this delay issue.

It's sad really:(

@ KnightsRuleTheGame Thank you for your reply. I can't agree with you enough. I don't care about my rating at all. I think people who do this stuff must be upset their rating goes down. Its poor sportsmanship and yes sad. I'll play whoever, whenever. As long as I have the opportunity to learn I'll take anyone on. Glad to see theres more players like me who just play for the love of the game. Great topic and I'm glad you started it

Its because when they start to lose they cry, and cannot find the "resign" button through all the tears.
