Play slow chess. Put effort into your thought process and planning. Analyze your games and make sure you learned from mistakes. It kinda is that simple - effort = improvement. Unfortunately a lot of people trick themselves into thinking they are putting in effort when all they are really doing is putting in time. Big difference. It depends on how badly you want to improve vs having fun. Improvement can be difficult and tedious compared to simply playing. This advice brought to you by a music teacher and very average chess player.
