Tricks are fun, and can pull off a quick win at your level. You’ll see less of it when you face better rated opponents. (You’ll see less Scholar’s Mate, not tricks.)
You should take more time to consider each option when you can capture with more than one piece.
Hey all,
I just started playing chess a month ago and I got into it because I'm intrigued by clips from Hikaru's insane premoves and calculation, Magnus' 500 iq plays and Levy's personality.
By no means my skill level is any where close to being average. I got rekt by scholar's mate a few games in a row. After that, I went on watching some videos on how to defend against it and a video on Magnus Carlsen vs an IM attempting scholar's mate against him. And I literally won against everyone of my elo attempting scholar's mate against me.
My point is why is everyone trying to attempt these checkmates when it literally loses the game if the opponent knows what tricks they are up to?
Also, how can I identify better what pieces should I be taking with?
eg: when rewatching the second game, I realized instead of taking the pawn on E5 with my pawn, I could have taken it with my knight and created a double fork.
