Total Number of Chess Games Played In History?

There’s no way to know but interesting to speculate how many total chess games have EVER been played through all of history. Not just all online games from every chess website, but also every game also ever played over the board for both competitive play and recreationally, including non televised or recorded games. Probably at least tens of billions if I had to guess as of today.

The total number of games of chesscom + lichess + all other platforms that have chess will be more than enough to show an estimate. Multiply this number by x2 and you will know how much chess games have been played since the dawn of humanity.

I think you have to multiply by more than 2.
Estimated 70% of the population have played a game of chess in their life.
That is much more than the members of the chess sites.

but chess players here play way more games a day than average, maybe 20+ games a day. In the past you can't even find 5 people to play at your rating.

Now even if you're Magnus Carlsen and have less than 100 players around your rating in the world. You can practice indefinitely with an engine around your level.
