In a childrens chess club  a move to check was made,  check was called by the mover but the piece was not released from movers hand.  I ruled in favour of the mover although check was called .      Much argument and tears between 8 year olds. Did I make the correct decission    John T

The move is not determined until the piece is released on the square. If the player's  hand wasn't removed from the piece then they could still move to a diffrent square with that same piece.

and calling check is not part of chess rules and is actually considered bad form, although with your students it is probably a good idea.
