Aloha,
A bit of history concerning some of the (legends) players you mention!
I was at this event and so remember seeing my first GM's and it is still fresh in my mnd, well it helps to review the article below! And yes Karpov was very young and I suspected he would be the next challenger even back in 1972 to Fischer after seeing him play!
Reference: SAN ANTONIO 1972 - http://chess.bc.ca/Bulletins/BCCFBulletin133.pdf
I remember these 16 players every well as some played in San Antonio, Texas in 1972. even WCC Fischer I believe stopped by to check it out (unoffcially)!
The players were:
Koltanowski (tournament coordinator),
Golombek (tournament director), Church, Edmondson (USCF director)

Karpov has occasionally come a cropper on the Black side of IQP positions - this was one such occasion.

I wonder how many senior greats ( legends ) are still around to play such an event if sponsorship could be found ? I will start with a few I can think of : Spassky, Gligoric, Portisch, Korchnoi, Larsen , are there others that are 60 or older that might make such a group ? Karpov is only 58 so he wouldnt be eligible... he's just a spring chicken .
