I am here to just try to prove to my parents that this won't happen. To do this...  if you have tried the chess.com membership trial and have not had your credit card hacked or anything like that pls post a comment and say you haven't.. and then I can show this to my parents as proof. pls post!!! the more the better!! pls post guys!! I need this quick!! i beg you guys!!!!!! pls post.. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm currently using this trial time, and I used my credit card to do this. No problems so far! The trial must be cancelled in ten days time or you will be charged the full Diamond Yearly membership fee. It seems worth the money I think, nevertheless the question was about safety and I trusted my card with no issues. Smile

Look around at all those with chess.com memberships...

They obviouly trust chess.com, and many renew their memberships yearly without mishap. Chess.com is a safe site, check the bottom of the membership page.

I'm a diamond member, no probs about credit card. And for the parents: I think you should support your kid wanting to play chess, so much better then most online gaming crap.

And this site has multiple thousand paid members, myself being one of them. If there was anything wrong with it, they would have said something.

Experience:

My cousin is a member on chess.com, and he told me about the free-trail membership. He said he tried it for the ten days and there was no problem with his credit card. Chess.com has some of the best staff and trust from many of its members. My cousin later renewed his membership for one year. He loves the membership! I'm planning to get one too, sooner or later! Laughing

Logically:

Over 10 000 out of the million members on chess.com has tried this before, and no complains! Plus, the site  has been running for 4 years!  This is the #1 chess site in the web. There is no better.

Extra Prove:

Money Back Guarantee
30 Days - no questions asked!
Credit Card Encryption

i dident ask for it and my dad isnt upset about my membership due to he bought it

I was going to take them up on the offer of free membership trial to see the difference.

They asked for a credit card and I thought "If it's free why do they need my credit card no." then I realized it's just the usual free trial and at the end of the trial period they don't just stop the service they automatically charge you for membership. In that 10 day period many will lose track of time and not cancel the "free" service and thus get billed.

willilo

actually kyska they ask for the credit card number so you don't just keep doing the trial over and over again. Also when you do the trial .. you have a big Hyperlink on you profile and account page which is how you stop the trial.

Tried the diamond membership trial, no problems... went ahead and paid for the platinum membership at the end of it and again no problems, no overcharges, no suspicious zaps to the card of any kind... although I will probably upgrade to the diamond again.  I am a novice  and really miss the Chess Mentor available through the diamond membership.

Chess.com claims to be one of the largest (if not THE largest) onine chess sites on the web.  You don't get that way by screwing people over or ignoring account safeguards of some sort.

Most credit card fraud is from 'adult' unsecure sites and petrol stations (assistants scanning your card for cloning). There's also a more random element where computers generate names and numbers and make purchase attempts on various sites; often $1 donations to charities...if you have a common surname you stand more chance of suffering from this. The links posted above should prove this site's legitimacy.

Of course, your parents would never be held responsible for any fraud on their account anyway (unless they had done something as stupid as telling other people their PIN). Always better to use a 'credit' card rather than a 'debit' card (that's UK terminology, for anyone with a different system; the credit card being one where you pay later, and the debit card being the one where the money comes straight out from your bank account). The reason being with debit card fraud, although you'll get the money back, your automatic bank account payments will be returned unpaid during the ordeal and cause you a lot of problems. If it's on a credit card, you just don't have access to credit (so you can't borrow money that isn't yours anyway) on that particular card for a couple of weeks.

There is always the possibility that your parents might just be saying 'no, we're not buying you a chess.com membership' without actually giving you the straight answer.
