also, can't have a sicilian defense after the game starts 1.f4
TV gets Chess wrong again...

Anyone watch House MD? Well, they had a show about a chess player. In the episode (of course) they play a game.
The part that made me laugh was the interplay as they started the game
"Bird's Opening, passive approach, sign of a coward."
"Sicilian Defense, sign of an idiot."
I'd hardly call the Bird passive! And isn't the Sicilian one of the most popular defenses?
They should have used the Orangutan Opening and Borg Gambit.
But why would the chess player (who was playing in a tourney) say the Scilian when it is impossiable after 1...f4
Clearly, not a plot device

I guess he was just acting like a chess player. Always best to suspend one's disbelief when anything that requires specialist knowledge appears on the box... just easier that way.

don't hate on house! lol I need to rewatch that episode because I saw it when i didn't realy have any knowledge of chess.
Ive watched every single episode of House, including the 2 from the new season.
They make comments that contridict eachother in diffrent episodes so im not realy surprised. Like they proposed sickness X for a younger pacient in one episode and the same sickness for another pacient but said it only affects the old (or other way around I can't remember).

I can't believe the number of times they get the basic stuff wrong. The front-right square should be white. The king should be on the right for white. More than half the time these two things are wrong, even when the person playing is a president.
I think House portrayed chess relatively well. Bird's opening is passive in the sense that it makes a small claim in the center. White is just trying to get his pieces out, but does so without getting an advantage out of the opening.
The remark about the Sicilian didn't mean anything chesswise. The kid was just trying to get the last word.
