Does anyone know if the USCF memberships runs january thru december or does it go by when you purchase it?? I havent had a membership in years, but dont want to purchase it now if i have to do it again in 2months.

It goes by when you purchase it.  The expiration date will be on your card and the Chess Life label.    i wish I had paid for Life membership when I joined in 1969.

No, it's more that your job, your interests, your kids' or your amateur sports, music, and other activities mean you don't have time for chess, so you let the membership lapse.  When you eventually renew, your old ID number is still on record and your official OTB and Correspondence ratings are still good.  I have not been a Tournament Director for about 16 years and, because of that long lapse, that's the only thing of mine that has "expired," though I would have no trouble getting it renewed if I wanted it so.
