use of chess engine in online games

Is it proper to use chess engine for online games?? I mean on online games you get plenty of time to do research, if a person takes the help of a computer to solve a position than i think it is unfair. It will be like playing human vs computer, or who knows computer vs computer if both player are using chess engine.

A Chess engine is a program that will play chess. It is a program that will "think" and decide on chess moves to make. You can read about them here:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_engine .

Please note, it is illegal to use engines during an ongoing chess.com game. The real advantage for them is to use after your game to maybe help you reaize where you went wrong, and how you might be able to play better.

There are no guarantees, but chess.com's staff does a good job at detecting and eliminating cheaters, and engine cheating is rare at your level anyway. :)

oh! com'on man why do u ask this Q?

its ofcource banned.

and its so ridiculous that people use that to make moves.

and i thougt newbie will use it more... thought rated player will be more fair. But guess i was thinking the opposite......... anyway tanks and hope people  don't use it.

Again aswanth why are you  being so arrogant. If i am confuse than i guess i can ask for answer. And instead of answering you are passing useless comment. It is true that cheating is banned but not everyone follows the rule, so i had my doubts.

The engine-cheater may very well be a newbie, but if they cheat at all frequently, their rating on chess.com will be much higher than 1400. I have more than a few games under my belt and I'm confident I've never played an engine-cheater here. :)

Not such a silly question. Engine use is not banned in certain other places (ICCF and IECG for example) so a person coming from one of those places might well wonder if they are allowed here.

Engine use is really allowed in ICCF and IECG games? Wow! I'm glad I don't play there. Some of these engines have Master level or better ability and I'd hate to think I'm playing someone at my level who has an option to be guided by a Master.

Not so much allowed as ignored maybe. Both take the view that detecting engine use is very difficult, if not impossible, if a skilled player is doing the using. The IECG is entirely free and run by volunteers so limited time and resources may be a factor there.

To see how high up the tree engine use extends in correspondence chess try this link: http://www.amici.iccf.com/issues/Issue_07/issue_07_ivar_bern_part_1.html  Look up Joop van Oosterom as well.

when i first came to chess.com I had not played for years while I was playing i would study openings and tactics as soon as i heard about cheating in chess i thought that this was what i was doing i did not play games with the computer making my moves but used it to help me remember old tactics as soon as i saw the post i quit studying while actively playing but new members should receive some guidlines

I was playing when I am at 1800 but I came across someone who is at 1675... after that I lose my game.. i thought i Just have mistakes in my game but after that I analyzed my Game.. put it in a stockfish thinking that he/she is better than me... BUT!! Atlast i saw why I am undoubtedly defeated.. he/she is using engine... because.. every peice movement is  " not by a human!!"

1997kings

I know chess.com administration won't allow this..

So please make softwares that would detect incidence like that....

It is pretty unfair!!..  i work hard to get to that level only to be cheated by someone

In before the lock.

I like how he whines about cheating but he equally breaks the rules by abandoning the game.

Well, I wouldn't say that cheating and abandoning the game are "equally breaking the rules" ... One is more serious than the other.

Do you think thats unfair if i use a chess-engine that i programmed myself? i mean this engine cant be compared to something like stockfish, i think it has an elo of about 1000-1500.
