Video Lessons: What are the Best of the Best?

Sort:
peterb1201

I've watched a few random chess.com video lessons.  Some of them have been great.  Some of them have been just ok.  Some of them have been pretty bad.  Sometimes the bad ones are bad not because of the content, but because the presentation itself is unpolished or wandering or just not to-the-point.

Yesterday, I picked up Chessmaster 9000 on a whim and watched Josh Waitzkin's game commentaries.  These.  Things.  Are.  Awesome.  They're interesting, they're engaging, they're about surprising topics, they're approachable, and gripping.

Now then.  I have no doubt that there are some video lessons on chess.com that are as good as these.  But there are so many of them, it's hard to sort the wheat from the chaff.  So this thread is intended to answer this question:  What are the BEST video lessons you've found on chess.com?  Try to limit your answer to no more than 5 to 10, and give reasons for why you picked the ones you picked.  (And, be as specific as you can - name particular lessons, not just "everything by this one guy.")

Thanks!

IM Danny Rensch's Live Sessions.  Highly educational and entertaining.

If you want serious chess, avoid Rensch Yell. I would suggest some Khaciyan Lectures such as those on practical defense. Peresheltyn is my favourite, but not too many of his videos are applicable to me.

Am a fan of Chess Network's videos..  I should watch more of them.. He has many on youtube and here as well. He's very clear in his discussion, theory and also with his diagrams, arrow pointing etc. His language is easy to understand.

And my micro necrorebuttal: Laughing I will be the first to admit that Danny is an acquired taste, although the Danny of 3 years ago has calmed down quite a bit since he stopped drinking coffee.  The first time I saw him was on the old Danny and David Pruess show and my honest reaction was "Who is this buffoon?"  So I get your skepticism; it took me a few of his shows to get past his presentation, and realize that the man really knows his chess.  And the generous display of all his mildly neurotic coping mechanisms is way better than anything on reality TV.  Wish I were smart enough to be able to get into his pawn structure series...

Dog, if your into reality TV; http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3314218/                              Its got nothing to do with chess videos. SorryEmbarassed

Nope, not into reality TV, Ron.  Tried the Kardashians once and fled back to chess.  Oh Ok I'll admit a fondness for the ones where they rebuild restaurants and bars (Don't we all wish we could rebuild our lives?), but Danny is still better.

And back on topic. I'm a correspondence player and literally every time I play the French or the Caro, I look at these.  Well, not the whole series, just the relevant parts.  There are videos on exchange and Tarrasch also.

Old thread, worth a bump.

I've been watching John Bartholomew's series of videos "Climbing the rating ladder". He's an IM and plays a series of 5 minute games against people of various rating ranges, and commentates while he does so. It's really entertaining, I love it.

I've watched almost every youtuber and a lot of chess.com videos, I think the best by far is GM Sam Shankland on chess.com videos.

The best, but not the most informative, is Hutch.

Ivan Sokolov's series on creating crisis in the middlegame is pretty darn good.

I watched one video clip, and it seems to me that it was filmed using a screen recording from movavi https://www.movavi.com/screen-recorder-mac/  . Excellent recording quality, and also great sound quality, so I immediately knew it was movavi.

dudeco

bump for most relevant videos on tactics and strategy
