Weapons of War

If chess pieces were weapons, what would they be?

Well let's see.

The king would be some kind of tiny club.  Simply invert it, and whack away with the weighted base.  So much the better if you're triple weighted for tournament play.

The queen would be some other kind of tiny club.  Excpet with no jaggy bit to dig into your palm.

The rook?  A nice, thick, tiny club.  A bit short, but maybe good for people with tiny fingers and stout hands.  Like if you hang out with Tolkienian dwarves.  Or midgets.

The bishop, being nice and pointy on top, is probably better used for stabbing into people's eyes.

The pawn would be another kind of tiny club.

Knights are useless, but could probably do in a pinch as some sort of crude projectile.  Throw it, see what happens.

Someone got creative with their bullet-casings!

I was thinking Pawn = Infantryman with bayonet

Rook = Long range cannon, that sort of thing.

As for Queen, Bishop, King, etc... i look forward to what the imagination suggests.

I like this cartoon done for the Fischer/Spassky WC in 1972.

lol - you take things so literally. The life-sized chess pieces would be quite lethal in your case!

I've often wondered this myself.  The pawns would obviously be infantry.  The knights, because they can jump over other pieces but only travel for relatively short distances, would be air cavalry.  The rooks might be long range artillery.  The queen possibly long-range bombers, but it's easy for her to get boxed in. And of course the king would be the general's HQ.

If we're talking modern war here - I'd vote for the following:

pawns = small arms

knights = rpg \ grenade launcher (when you throw a knight into an enemy position, you can do damage in the form of pins and attacks in a limited radius)

bishops = .50 scoped rifle ( a precision weapon, highly mobile)

queen = cluster bomb ( radiates damage in all directions, can dismantle enemy positions)

rook = recoilless rifle  (limited mobility when there are obstacles on the board, high damage output)

king = sample of weaponized nano-tech  (deadly, but if captured by the enemy it ends the game)
