Weird question: clothes

I like to keep is casual, here I am at a recent local scholastic tournament:

i have seen 1300s at tournaments wearing suits and grand masters wearing torn-up clothing.  i'm with you, though, i think that chess players should wear respectable dress; i always like to see suits more than i like to see tee shirts.

One guy came to my chess club dressed in some sort of Darth Vader outfit....well, a helmet with a clear visor on his head, and a trash bag cape..he played the entire game that way.

TheGrobe

You mean like this?

I think I played you. I was wearing a Crinolene dress?

well the helmet/visor combo is very close, but no police gear otherwise...just a weird cape he seemed to have fashioned out of a trash bag.

mxiangqi

oh and he kept the visor down...

now that's funny.  real funny.  thanks for the visual.  :)

Go to almost any mid-sized chess tournament (in the States), and the fashion competition is clearly who dresses down the lowest.

We are an eccentric group.  Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Are we any better dressed when playing online?  Not sure about that one.

New York isn't the only city in which this guy competes.  Laughing

when you home alone and playing chess is it important what you wear

Unless you are on webcam, I don't see why that should matter.  Then again, the clothes you might wear (or lack of) might make that a non-issue as well.

Nobody should have a problem unless you walk around the house naked without any blinds.  Now that I think about it, that might be a good way to pay for the blinds.  Hey look!  A check and a letter from the Homeowners Association.  "Please do not walk around the house naked. -signed the neighborhood"

@anthonyCG -- LOL that is hilarious!

@skewrly -- welcome!

I think that iq and chess skill have nothing in common.  also, I don't believe that fashion should have to be a mandate for chess players.

Sorry.. I have a weird question... But i can't help wondering, after seeing like a thousand chess player pictures (specially men)... Why people from the lower ratings (>2200) dresses so badly and people from the higher ratings (>2600) dresses so great??

Have a hint?

My hint is that your anecdotal observation has no meaningful significance (especially any statistical significance) to anyone other than yourself.

The new dress code will even things out. Smile

Generally speaking, the answer is obvious. Top players need to look attractive to get invitations & endorsement proposals. Who would ask a terrible-looking person to advertise something? Amateurs don't need to care for all this stuff, so they can enjoy themselves and wear sneakers and t-shirts.

Dressing smartly helps me to feel confident during a game, but alas, it would not be of much help against you

It wouldn't be much help against Helen Keller.

hey cljettu -- Pogonina is married, so you're not likely to get anywhere with your not-so-subtle attempts at flirting ;-)
