memory = pattern recognition from studying many thousands of master games + experience from their own games.
real-time decisions = calculating imbalances and variations in order to procure a plan.
I read that masters may use upward of 40% pattern recognition (not having to calculate from a position) and 60% calculating variations.
Which is huge compared to most of us who may use upward of 5% pattern recognition and 95% calculating variations.
When top GMs make moves, what % of them are from memory vs. real-time decisions?
And how does this compare to all other players (from sub 1200 to IMs....etc.)?
