What are good free desktop openings databases, and where to download large amounts of games?

Looking for a desktop openings database for free. I am running Windows.

I have seen a lot of positive stuff about Shane’s Chess Information Database (SCID) for example, but I am not sure where to download the database stuff etc.

I think the point is for you to post your own games.

There are already many databases online for you to access master level games. There is no need to recreate them. I think SCID provides an available 1.4 million game database for you to use.

I also now noticed that OpeningTree has a few hundred million games in its database, and that will probably be enough for me

I am working on it too atm, my work in progress notes:

- ‘scid’ is not the same as ‘scid vs pc’. The last one is most recommended;
- for as I understand it till now scidvspc does not come with a database
- caïsabase.co.uk provides a database
- stockfish might be the free engine I need.
