What are some of the best ways to tell that your opponent is using an engine to cheat at your game?

Upon analysis, if they played a long game while making only good/perfect moves, you could start investigating and analyzing his/her other games.

I have no idea although I got accusation of cheating in the past when I haven't. Once my internet connection was bad and I kept being disconnected which made someone suspicious. Another time I won in a game where my opponent was a few hundred above my rate, so they assumed I was cheating. I am not sure what benefits people gain from cheating in online chess, I can't see it fulfilling for one's ego, as that one knows for sure they got the high rating by cheating!! Any insights why people cheat in online chess??

We should start banning the forumers who post these threads. Would make less of a headache for us.

You could just use your time to learn from your mistakes instead of creating pointless threads.

Obviously a high %age of good/perfect moves in a majority of games would be an indication. But there are some games where your opponent plays so badly the right moves are often obvious.  But note there are games where such a result happens. Here's a short draw (https://www.chess.com/daily/game/184628742) I had recently where, except for my one bad move, it "looks" like we're both cheating - and where my (Black) "CAPS" was the equiv. of an over 2400 rating, but that wasn't the case:

null

Here's another one - the best miniature I ever played (https://www.chess.com/daily/game/160141534) - where the engine analysis looks suspicious for me (White):

null

But look at the game - my opponent blundered into the old trap-the-B-in-the-corner situation where the best moves were obvious, then after I took a chance with my tenth move, the rest of the game almost played itself.  Note also that my 5th move, f4, is what Stockfish 8 considered an "Inaccuracy" but in GM Suetin's book, The Complete Vienna, he says 5 f4 is "forced!"

A very steady pace is a telltale sign. If they are making sharp counterintuitive moves in complex positions with little more time for thought than simple obvious moves, that is a major red flag. If these sharp moves are very precise at critical moments and the main inaccuracies are second best moves in an already winning position, that's another red flag, especially if the inaccuracies are at moments where the top move is obvious to a strong human player. That's the sign of someone making a lame attempt to avoid detection.

You can watch old videos from Simon Williams' YouTube channel for numerous examples of cheaters playing against him in standard.

If you are cheating by engine use, you are usually going to have a high rating, statistically it can be expected that there are more cheaters among the very high rated players.....but there are some very good human players that usually make the best moves and don't cheat and those players are usually titled players. The ones that are most suspicious to me are very high rated players that are not titled. Also, I think there is more than one way to cheat. I have experienced many instances where my clock races and the opponents hardly moves particularly in bullet, and NO it is not lag, I have a good connection.

Analyse the game. If it's over 30/40 moves, almost perfect for 1 side, and rapid, investigate more of his/her games.
