Letters run horizontally from white's perspective and name the columns (called files) of the board (e.g. the a-file is the furthest column to the left if you're white). Numbers run vertically from white's perspective and name the rows (called ranks) of the board (e.g. the 1st rank is the rank with all of white's pieces at the start of the game).
