I know GM is Grand Master, and IM is International Master (right?) and I was wondering if someone could tell me what the other levels of master are. I’ve seen CM and FM as well

@balrog2021 and @TheCytonic

Open titles:

GM - Grandmaster
IM - International Master
FM - FIDE Master
CM - Candidate Master

Women’s titles:
WGM - Women’s Grandmaster
WIM - Women’s International Master
WFM - Women’s FIDE Master
WCM - Women’s Candidate Master

National chess federations are also able to award:
NM - National Master (often roughly the level of CM)

You can find out more about the rating requirements on Wikipedia or the FIDE website.

Hope that helps!

The CM and WCM title used to be obtainable through various methods apart from the rating requirements. That’s why you’ll see some oddly low rated CMs and WCMs. I believe they’ve discontinued that practice now.

An ordinary WCM will have a rating of 2000+ FIDE. An ordinary CM will have a rating of 2200+ FIDE.

@puzzleslolz the CM and WCM titles are sometimes awarded for youth players who win national or high level youth championships, with the expectation that they’ll continue to improve! Not all do
