Very true, they are very similar. The size of the bishops though make it differentiable enough
What are these chess pieces

Kind of, but all of them were cut from flat stone, and they still retain that shape. All of them are flat on the back except the rook though even its top and bottom are flat. Its also more detailed, lots of little cuts to form the design.

They look like one of the Mayan Aztec sets that I believe are commonly available in South America. They are made out of various materials, including onyx and resin.

It does look very reminiscant f the mayan, but there are some big differences. Could it be that my set is a replication of theirs? or is there another type of chess that looks like these?

I like the stylised knight in that set, Batgirl. Much as I love Staunton sets, I've often wondered why the original knight design was so realistically depicted when everything else was stylised in a very basic way. I wonder whether a knight like that in the set you posted might not have been more in line with the other pieces. That said, I do love the classic Jaques-type of knight.

I'd search images of Mayan or Aztec sets and see if you can spot the same design. They do vary quite a lot in detail (like Staunton sets).

I found this page. It has 3 very similar sets and the owners are calling them Aztec:

Do you guys have any guesses as to what their made of?
Yes... I had a set like that but white and green pieces, that as far as I can remember, were made of onyx, that I bought in Mexico.
Definitely Mayan/Aztec. Made in Mexico. I bought a set like it in 1973 in Neuvo Laredo when I was stationed @ Ft. Sam Houston. Cost me $10.50.

I had a Nigerian thornwood set that I was curious about. I stumbled upon chess museum.com and learned what I had. I sold it on eBay as I could not play chess with it.

I don't have my chess set with me, nor any pictures to verify my statement, but the chess set that you bought is actually the same design of my very first chess set that I acquired (here in Mexico) and it is actually very very common here in craft flea markets.
So yeah, it is most likely one of the variants of the Mayan/Mexica design.
So I am a casual chess player, I don't know much about specific chess sets. I found a peculiar chess set at an estate sale and they look like nothing I have ever seen before, they do not resemble the traditional shapes of chess pieces much except for the rooks and knights. They also seem to be made of a crystal like material. Definitly handcrafted, and not machined. Do you think you guys can help me dig up any kind of information? Either way their my new playing set, but if their a bit to special then to the shelf they go! They also share a lot of similarites in design so they have to be one set.
