Being matched with similarly rated players means you are likely to lose half of your games and sometimes those losses will come in clusters. I think that's the main cause.
What causes win streaks and losing streaks.
Rating goes up quickly when you win a lot. I have been lucky in some games as well. I hung my queen and was about to resign waiting for him to take it but he didn't and I won. There is more luck in chess then one imagines. If you know an opening well and your opponent doesn't then you are going to win a lot more often and vice-versa.
I have been on a hot streak lately in blitz where it seemed that I couldn't string together any type of meaningful winning streak for a long time and my rating seemed stuck at much lower than I thought it should be. There was a lot of Murphy's law that caused a lot of losses. I had distractions and brain freezes and I would lose on time in winning positions or choke in winning positions. The opposite has been happening lately. My opponents are blundering or losing on time. I might be playing slightly better and have more confidence but it just seems that the close games are falling in my favor which feels good but it still feels inexplicable. I hope I keep it up. I was just wondering how other people feel when they go on winning streaks and losing streaks. When I was losing a lot it just felt like I couldn't win a game in blitz. I could be up a queen and still lose. It was quite frustrating. I wish I could bottle the winning formula or maybe winning begets winning and you have a lot more confidence to pull out wins and vice versa with losing streaks. I would like to hear other people's opinion on this.
