What Chess Set(s) do you have?

Hi guys, not sure if this thread has been made before, but I am curious.

I have only one chess board with me, and I absolutely love it. This is it.

I love playing on it, and it is a handy piece to learn when I need a visual aid when reading Idiot's guide to chess.

I was wondering, though. What type of chess set(s) do you guys have, and do you recommend it? At the moment I am not really looking to buy another chess set (probably couldn't afford it anyway), but you never know. I may want to have an official set to play and study in my house, while using the magnetized set for when I travel.

A friend showed me this, which her family has as the family chess set, and I kind of want it >.>

It's easier for me to show you what I have rather than list them all, but I have at least 8 sets. ranging from 5 inches by 5 inches all the way up to 20x20.

Take a look at my photo album here if you want to see them all and my "Chess Central" office.  Cool

I've got four sets, one is a folding hand-carved travel set I bought in the Philippines many years ago.  The next is a small 8" X 8" marble & onyx board I bought in Mexico, which is playable but a bit tiny.  Probably best for a display set.  I also have a cheap wooden folding set with small pieces that I bought mainly for a study set or one that I can take places without worrying about getting damaged or lost.  Then my pride & joy is my large onyx & marble set I bought earlier this year in Mexico with the Aztec calendar engraved into the board.

In order of aquisition I have
Harry Potter themed set

A very nice and quite old antique hand carved set

A rather handy pocket sized set

Another travel set, this time a bit bigger
And my pride & joy, a hand carved full size set made of fossilstone and black marble

The Marble set above started my love of what HOS calles "Imperial" style knights, with their head poised down. My ultimate chess set would be the HOS Mammoth Ivory set.

This is my Board.  It hasn't Improved my game; but it gives me a better quality of defeat!

I play with a 4" King; traditional Staunton Pieces, in Boxwood & Bud Rosewood.

- square size: 2 1/4 inches
- light squares: ash
- dark squares: walnut burl
- border: zebrawood - cove profile
- accent: none
- finish: oil and wax

A vinyl tournament set and a small wooden set, that's it.

I have two sets, both Drueke #35. I am thinking about a teakwood set 8" king and building a board using tile and then buy 2 matching chairs, more for looks than play. Any thoughts?

I'm old with nothing else to spend my money on (my other addictions were killing me) so I have more than I can count.  Bloody materialism I know. Embarassed

In decreasing order of "niceness"

1.  HOS Sheffield 4.4 in blood rosewood.  A standard Staunton design except for the more realistic "horses".

2. An Official Staunton (think they're out of business) 4.5 ebony Staunton notable for its' huge knights.

3. An older HOS 3.5 tournament set of ebonized boxwood that has faded to a lovely dark chocolate.  Knights are much nicer than current ones.

4. A little 3" ebony Staunton knockoff direct from India that I have paired with a 14" folder.

5. A 4" modern set from India I got off Ebay (ebonized).  Sounds awful I know and friends hate it, but I like it.

6. A lovely little Zagreb style in rosewood but with same colored filials 2.5"

7. An HOS collector 3.75 in plastic with a silicone board.

There are some plastic portables, an old Drueke analysis, and 4 wooden boards.   Right now I have 6 sets out at "chess command central".   God I'm pathetic.

Aside from my other sets I mentioned in my post 19 months ago, I recently made a chess board from a piece of plywood and got a $30 double-weighted wooden set to play on it:

My BCE set...

MrJDA

I just bought my first chessboard, can anyone tell me what kind it is?

Phylar

A potentially racist one? D=

No, seriously...I have no idea. Though I am pretty sure I know what it was based off of.
