when he said that new chess is corrupt? and what's the difference between old and new chess?

Creg

I don't think it wise to worry about what Fischer, assuming you are referring to Robert James (Bobby)  Fischer, has to say. He is regarded as a person in need of pschological help. You also only provide an out of context statement, so I'm not sure what, where or why the statement was said.

He meant Chess is fixed like Professional Wrestling Players pre-arranging their matches and moves.

But......What?? That doesn't make any sense!

Fischer refers to old chess as what we are currently playing, with the pieces set up in the fixed position of rook, knight, bishop, queen (on its own colore) and king.  His new chess is Fischer random chess or Chess960 (there are 960 possibilities for setting up the initial chess position).  Fischer announced this type of chess in 1996, a variant of Shuffle chess, to get out of book and prevent cheating or fixed games.  Fischer believes that the Russians were and are fixing all international chess events with memorized, planned-ahead, chess games.  Fischer thinks that random chess forces a player to create every move orignally, and not based on memorized book moves and computers.  In random chess, both players have to come up with original strategies.  In 2001, Peter Leko became the first Fischer Random Chess world champion.  A few days ago, Lev Aronian won the world Chess960 championship over Vishy Anand.  This is the 2nd time in a row that Aronian was won this event, held in Mainz, Germany.

Thanks! Now it makes some sense.

Never heard of chess960 do both sides have their pieces set up the same and who says where they go.

They move the same as regular chess pieces but you can set up your pieces in any random way as long as your king is between bothe rooks and the bishops are on diffrent colours. An example of a 960 set set up:

Trickster you are incorrect.  White and black must have the same arrangement in mirror image.

corrupt in chess?

i heard like game fixing....ever heard specialized high tech gadgets which some are like hearing/seing aided desighns through computers?

hondoham

if being able to string out a whole game of best moves by hard study and memorization gets defined as corruption, it makes politicians look a whole lot better.Smile

i never heard of 960chess b4, just wikipedia'd it. looks like bobby has had a little too much time on his hands. he should know that chess rules only get to change so many times per thousand years. don't burn them all up at once.

You do realize this thread is nine years old....

I'd guess either the fact that opening theory takes the soul out of chess, or in fact rigged games at the top level.

Knowing Fischer's rep, especially in his latter years, I'm sure this is a wormhole subject. Rigged games, planned draws, etc...

He was referring to the Interzonal Tournaments, where Soviet players would play each other to easy, prearranged draws so they'd be fresh against non-Soviet opponents, which resulted in some weaker Soviets beating better foreign players.  That resulted in the system changing to individual knockout matches where Fischer shocked the world in demolishing Taimanov 6-0, Larsen 6-0, and Petrosian 5W-3D-1L.
