What does it mean "opponent won on time"

I'm pretty new to chess and I've lost several 10 minute games due to "white or black won on time" when there is still time left to play?? The game stops and says opponent "won on time", but the 10 minutes are not over yet. Can anyone explain this to me please? Thanks

There are two clocks... Each player has its own clock. In this case 10 minute games is 10 min for each. Every time you make a move your opponents clock starts running until he makes a move. When he does it's your clock that is now running until you make your move and so on. If your clock reaches zero your opponent wins. If his clock reaches zero, you win!

10 min is usually consider too fast for beginners. Try playing 30 min, or at least 15|10

15|10 means 15 mins each plus 10 second increment. Every time you make a move you get an extra 10 seconds

Ahhh.............no wonder I'm doing this, and actually beating myself then. Very important lesson for me! Thank you very much for responding Morfizera happy.png

Lol no problem, that happens you're not the first person I see making that mistake.

One of the best things about chess is there's always something new to learn.  Once you get used to the rules and moves you learn the two special moves (castling and en passant). Then you start learning new tactics, etc etc... And it's even cooler when you get to apply what you've learnt.  Hope you enjoy the game and have fun!

Yes, I was just playing another game and lost..............but not by "time out" happy.png Now I watched both clocks and played 15/10 as you suggested. I have a long way to go, but I love the game! Thanks again, and have a great evening.

Play games with increment like 15/10 t avoid time outs always check your time if its Low then move a bit quicker 😊 Avoid playing bullet and blitz as you are a beginner 😊
