"Takes" (captured a piece)
what does the x mean in the algebraic notations example, qxf1+

x=captures
+=check
#=checkmate
name of square=(Q,N,B,R)= promotes to queen knight bishop or rook
0-0-0=castles queenside
0-0=castles kingside
so qxf1+ means queen captures on f1 check

It is also worth noting that some moves may have extra notation to "disambiguate" them.
This occurs most often when the rooks are able to "see" each other. When they move along the back rank, a disambiguation must be used to make it clear which rook moved. For example, "Rad1" (Rook [on the a-file] to d1).
If two rooks are on the same file instead, they would be disambiguated with a number. For example, if both rooks are on the e-file, with one on the eight rank and another on the second rank, moving the eight-rank bishop to the fifth rank would be written as "R8e5".
On the rare occasion where there are three or more of the same piece, all of which can move to the same space, both the rank and file must be specified (ex. "Qb6d4" would be used if there are also queens on d3 and g4).
