What happens if chess got solved?

Hey

do you think that chess can be ''solved''?

We already know that this is probably not going to happen any time soon - but if we assume chess was solved today, it probably wouldn't have a tremendous effect on actuall play. This is because, other than accurate and "finished" theory branches, the moves to memorize would be too many for a human to actually remember. There would also be a lot of variations. Even if another human plays a move that theoretically lose in, say, 500 moves, the other human player would have to memorize 500 moves + all the branches (that's a lot), which is impractical. In essence, at some point you would have to think and calculate.

This could mean that the chess "game", at least for humans, is infinite. Unless we ever evolve to computers somehow...

What a stupid question.

You appear to have answered your own question as to what would happen:  if chess is solved, you won't play anymore.  Gosh, what a loss to the rest of us.

TheGrobe

A whole bunch of a academics, and cuirous chess players say "Wow, cool" and then we go on playing the game as we always have.

trysts

We would start building pyramids.

All I care about is trying to solve for mate.

Assume for the moment that computers have solved chess. There are not enough atoms in the universe to store the data. Computers, thus, must begin the work anew.

tabor

If chess ends. . .do not worry. There you have Tic Tac Toe. . .

Undecided

proletariate

10 (^79) known atoms in the observable universe and 10 (^120) possible chess variations.....mmmmm

oh and i didnt know that Chess was a problem ? what is the problem we are solving ?

gameoverziggy

If chess was solved we could all play Go.

oleulrik

hahaha................ what a question...... papa

chessandlaw

I quote from Wikipedia:

"Whether a game is solved is not necessarily the same as whether it remains interesting for humans to play. Even a strongly solved game can still be interesting if the solution is too complex to be memorized."

WestofHollywood

Wouldn't the number of computers you would need to solve chess be greater than the number of atoms in the universe?

bobbyDK

we will play it of course.

but I guess some openings will not be played anymore.

who would play an opening that are computer declares losing.

Even if you cannot figure out how to with a opening you want to give yourself the maximum winning changes.

people who study opening lines will have a great advantage because the opening lines are winning.

autistic chess players will become GM because they can memorize all the way to mate.

if chess turns out to be losing for black all the time. when who would want to play black?
