what if black moved first?

How would it affect openings, if black was allowed to make the first move? Would the Komodo computer program be "confused" if it was forced to allow black to move first? Also, why must the board be positioned so there is a white square in the right corner? Mere tradition?

If black moved first then the opening will be laterally inverted and white square is kept on right so that your light squared bishop is on right hand and white king remains on right side.

Chess did not initially use algebraic notation but rather descriptive notation (P-K4 etc.). 1. P - K4, P - QB4 (Sicilian defense, general).

Further, there was a time when sometimes black would move first (in fact, the colours would take turns moving first).

Interesting, thanks. Now I'm thinking the "queen on its own color" setup could be changed, so the Black queen starts on white square, like White 's.

I've often wondered how such arch game would play out.

Pawnghost,

Compare:

Now the immortal game--

One minor problem--Anderssen actually had the black pieces. So this is what the game ACTUALLY looked like.

Wow, what a game, what an ending, no wonder it's called the immortal. Lionel sure had a lengthy name.

Simple answer: nothing much would change. Opening theory would be exactly the same. The only effect would be the fact that everything would become inverted and the opposite color would move to start the game.
