What if I refuse to handshake in an event?

What if I have a rival whom I don't really like much in real life and I don't want to make a handshake with him and I refuse the handshake. What can fide do to me? Will the ban me like they did to sergey? Can my opponent complain about it to arbiters?

Just shake their hand

it's respect for the game rather than your opponent

There was this Short Cheparinov incident. I think you can be forfeited if you don't shake and your opponent complains. Unless FIDE changed that rule.

Spit in your hand then offer to shake I have seen farmers do this at the market

but it is obviously bad sportsmanship to do so

From the ethics and disciplinary handbook effective from April 2022

11.9 General misbehaviour
a) Socially unacceptable behaviour: Misbehaviour of a personal nature which is generally unacceptable by normal social standards, or a failure to comply with normally accepted standards of courtesy and chess etiquette

From the press release a while ago

Behavioural norms of players in chess events(Press Release – high importance, immediate attention!)Having discussed several recent cases in different chess tournaments where the attitude of players toward their opponent or officials, journalists etc. was not acceptable under conventional social behaviour, the FIDE Presidential Board –at the suggestion of President Ilyumzhinov- decided on setting up strict rules regarding such behaviour.

Any player who does not shake hands with the opponent (or greets the opponent in anormal social manner in accordance with the conventional rules of their society) before the game starts in a FIDE tournament or during a FIDE match (and does not do it after being asked to do so by the arbiter) or deliberately insults his/her opponent or the officials of the event, will immediately and finally lose the relevant game.

Regarding a more comprehensive set of behavioural and ethical norms to be followed, FIDE Ethics Commission and the Arbiter’s Council are to elaborate guidelines for the players. The guidelines will be published on the FIDE website

So you can infer what the view of FIDE on not shaking hands would be.

some people have severe germ phobias, hopefully the tourney people, and opponents can accommodate that.

If you consider him a rival then you respect him on some level. Shake his hand and beat him.

I stopped shaking hands altogether when covid arrived. I now offer a fist bump instead, which carries a much lower risk. I hope I would not be penalised for this.
