most people are aware of Garry Kasparov playing a match against deep blue and overall losing but what if Anatoly Karpov played deep blue. would he have been humiliated by the computer or would he fare better than Kasparov.
the main thing to consider is the style of play. Karpov would would play solidly and would punish tiny positional errors made by his opponents. would a computer like deep blue (keep in mind this is not stockfish.) know about positional play and would it make tiny errors that karpov exploit.
what i don't know is how good deep blue actually is in terms of positional chess.
i think that the result of the match would've been deep blue overall on top but i think karpov would've done better than Kasparov.
what do you think the result of this game if it happened would be.
Have you read Kasparov's recent book about the match? (Deep Thinking)
It's not as straightforward as you are making it. Karpov broke down under the pressure of his first match with Kasparov. He might have reacted the same to the pressure of the match with Deep Blue.
The sudden improvements in the program between the first Deep Blue vs Kasparov match, which Kasparov won, and the second were very surprising to Kasparov. Human players do not suddenly jump 200 points in strength. It must have been very upsetting and perhaps humbling to him.
I have no doubt that Kasparov would have made adjustments in a longer match. However, it was a short match. There was no time. Having gotten what it wanted, IBM backed out of a promised rubber match.
Karpov would have had to go through the same process. He had already cracked in a somewhat similar situation. There is no reason to assume he would have been immune to such pressures.
