Hello Everyone! I am new to the chess world and its lingo. I registered my son for a beginners tournament. Can you tell me what a 4-SS, G/10 +5 ?   He is only 8 and think I registered him for the wrong thing. Thanks in Advance.

That is a four round tournament. Time control will be 10 minutes with a 5 second increment.

Is that a live over the board tournament?

4-SS means 4 rounds using the Swiss System (which is just a common system for pairing players. Don't worry about it!)

G/10+5 means each played gets 10 minutes on their clock and they get 5 seconds added to their clock for each move. So it's a pretty quick game. If you were thinking that the "10" referred to age, relax!

Thank you! I appreciate the responses. It is online and he usually plays 15minute games. So this may be quick for him, but he will survive. I actually didn't see the 4-SS, G/10 +5,  until I completed the registration. All I saw was beginner... I should have paid more attention. Thank you again!

G/10+5 isn't really much different from G/15. he should be fine.
