An outpost is a defended by a pawn, and cannot be attacked by an enemy pawn. Here, white's knight has an outpost on e5, and black's knight has an outpost on e4. Outposts are good!

I've been reading about openings in wikipedia, particularly pawn structure. Andrew Soltis presents 16 major themes in pawn structure. In his passages, he refers often to 'outposts'.
For example, The Caro Formation is described as having an e5 outpost for White. The e5 Chain pawn structure passage in wikipedia refers to White gaining an outpost on d4. This doesn't seem congruent with other uses of the term.
Can someone explain this term to me and possibly the advantage/disadvantage of having it?
Many thanks in advance.
