What is chaturanga?

Chaturanga is the first form of chess that involved pieces like the camel, cannon and elephant.
You can play it in the variants section.
Around the 7th/8th century chess moved through Persia where it became Shatranj. Also the word checkmate (shah mat) comes from that time.
In the Ottoman world, artists were forbidden to depict realistic sculptures of people and animals.
So before chess came to Europe, it had acquired the abstract piece designs we are now so familiar with. But in some countries, the bishop is still called the Elephant.
