yea, i've heard of this. wut is it?
What is FIDE?

The Fédération Internationale des Échecs or World Chess Federation is an international organization that connects the various national chess federations around the world and acts as the governing body of international chess competition. It is usually referred to as FIDE (pronounced /ˈfiːdeɪ/ "fee day"), its French acronym.[1]
FIDE was founded in Paris, France on July 20, 1924 [2]. Its motto is Gens una sumus, meaning "We are one people". Its current president (as of January 2008) is Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, who is also president of Kalmykia, an autonomous Republic in Russia.

1847 isn't too high. It's intermediate, I'd say, because to qualify for the lowest master level, you need a FIDE rating of ~2200. 2500+ is a grandmaster.

1847 would be class A within the USCF. I'm not sure anyone else uses this nomenclature.
FIDE Master is 2300 FIDE.
1847 FIDE, while not a killer rating, still represents a good amount of skill and knowledge.

You can search on the FIDE site for Lasitha Yasanga.
I found Subash Lasitha who could be the same person. You can see where an 1800 rated player is ranked in the world.

I believe there is a title called Candidate Master now, for 2200-2299
Aren't CM's only rated 2000-2199?

Here it is, straight from the horse, you pick the end:
The chapter on title regulations
The details on title qualification

oh, so this person with 1847 is good but not too good?
thx! now i cant wait to play this game
You can put whatever you want in your profile. The site asks for proof only from titled players.
Anyone ever heard of this FIDE ranking system? i was playing a new chess.com member and checked their profile and it showes a FIDE rating under her online chess ranking? it was pretty high, should i be intimidated?
