What is it with unrated players?

I hate starting online games with unrated players since they never seem to start the game and always time out.  What a waste of time!  Now normally when I send out an open seek in the box where it says "must have played at least ____ games" I'll put in 10 or 20 or so just so I know I'll get someone who is actually going to play and not abandon the game after making just one move or never making a move at all.  But there were a couple of occasions where I either forgot to do this or sent out an open challenge from the screen which doesn't give you this option.

I understand that they're probably just new to the site, but I think it needs to be expressed to them upon playing their first online games that if they start a game they need to play it.

It shouldn't really bother me, but I just felt the need to rant after watching another unplayed game time out.

It's all the Facebook trash coming here to play.  Site has gone downhill ever since the link.

EDIT  With notable exceptions of course. Wink

Ouch...

It wouldn't be too complicated to track and penalize clowns who do it too often. Simple algorithm. But chess dot com folks are too laissez faire!

I started up 6 matches as an unranked player (I said they could be unrated or rated, only one person went for rated) and have finished 4/started 1 more and haven't come close to timing out on anything. Also doing pretty well so far 3 wins 1 loss (and boy did I screw up in that loss, very dumb move on my part that I didn't even realize until I saw the reply move).

A string of bad luck does not a truth make. Everyone was unrated once and they can't get unrated unless someone will play them.

But if the game is abandoned, it is considered aborted and IIRC it doesn't count against their rating or count toward their first rated game played.

it cause unrated is suck!

It seems there are rules about "abandoned" vs. "time-out". I don't know what they are but just got a win (which I think I deserved) because a player just stopped playing after 15 moves when he got in a bad position. Maybe it was a real-life consideration, I don't know.

After your opponent makes 2 moves, the game can't be aborted.  If they time out, they lose.  However, if they've only made one move, or haven't yet made their first move, and they time out, then the game is considered aborted.  I think chess.com should consider the games aborted but take away 10 points or so from their rating for timing out.  So if they're unrated, then they would go to 1190.

But out of all the unrated players I've played, I'd bet that around 50% of them timed out without making a first or second move.  OK, I get that you come here wanting to play chess, so then play.  Don't get sidetracked by cute little kitten videos on facebook and forget to come back & play.

Don't waste your time playing unrated players unless you agree to do so. Your rating is important to you as it gives you an insight on just how good your chess playing skills are developing!
