Dangerous Moves isn't bad. Nothing like Searching, but it's a good chess movie in comparison to most chess movies. It's French and made in the early 80s. Just a drama with no real "danger" involved as the title implies. A third best might be Knight Moves. It's a crime thriller/mystery. Not great, but not unwatchable if such films interest you.

The Luzhin Defence with John Turturro is very good.

The Knights of the South Bronx was a made for TV film I also enjoyed. It starred Ted Danson and was based on a true story.

Who can forget Gerry's Game, the short by Pixar..

Geris game and Searching for Bobby fischer are the only ones you would watch for a reason other then "IT HAS CHESS IN IT!"

annotator, I think you are pretty much on target. I watched the Thomas Crown Affair (Faye Dunaway) because it "had chess in it." I thought it was pretty awful.

However I did enjoy the Luzhin Defence.

Searching for Bobby Fischer was on a cable channel recently and I recorded it.  My wife, who doesn't play chess, still found it a great movie.  I love chess and also thought it was great.

"Searching for Bobby Fischer" is the Kasparov of chess movies!

My favorite movie with Chess in it is probably Fresh, although it's not really a Chess movie.

Saccadic

I watched The Seventh Seal and it was crap

Just mentioning: Harry Potter1 had a chess game after the middle of the movie.

Searching for Bobby Fischer and The Luzhin Defense... in that order.

The best comedy routine having to do with chess is from Saturday Night Live from about twenty years ago. It featured Jim (not John) Belushi doing a parody of Bobby Knight as a chess coach. Memorable moments from that skit include "the coach" screaming at his protegé "Well, why don'tcha just GIVE him the Queen, huh?! Why don'tcha just hand it to 'im?!!" It ends with him grabbing a chair and throwing it and being unceremoniously escorted out while he's still screaming at the kid that's playing. Hilarious.

That was great although I didn't quite understand what happened after she meets Capablanca. Well, a happy ending, nonetheless.

i dont know what you guys are talking about. Searching for bob is a HORRIBLE movie. The guy playing pandolfini was clearly an enemy of pandolfini's and trying to paint both pandolfini and chess in a VERY negative light. The guy is a total jerk from the beginning, and probably turned off most parents who saw that movie from ever getting their kids involved in chess.
