What is the best color?

I have been playing chess for a while (about 7 years), and I was wondering what everyone's favorite color is. Sometimes I am good at black, and sometimes (most of the time, actually) white. Right now it is white, though black is climbing again. What are your preferences?

lou_u

White because I can choose an opening that I am comfortable with.  If I play as Black and am up against an opening that I am not familiar with then my confidence in the game is sometimes effected.

I own a chess set with purple pieces and green pieces.  I definitely play better with purple.

I prefer white because I can play my opening but then black is good too because sometimes we can predict...but I'm not good at that..so White.

Would purple be white or black? Or do you not know?

I am not saying that I have a problem with them, it is just that right now my favorite is white. I can win with both easily, though. Wink

Your stats page tells the truth, once you have a significant data set you will see at what color you play best.  For me it's white and here's the proof.

           WinsLossesDrawsGames
White 94 (62%) 55 (36%) 2 (1%) 151 (51%)
Black 84 (57%) 62 (42%) 2 (1%) 148 (49%)

I enjoy white because I start with the initiative.

to me, it would seem that you are better at black as you have less losses. you have no wins? what is your rating?

chessoholicalien

I perform better as Black.

The_Pyropractor

Interesting!!

The_Pyropractor

everyone seems to like white, so cool

Relentless95

I like black because it has more openings i like rather than with white, i couldn't care less. I play best with the Paulsen sicilian, I'm almost ubeatable with it, seriously i'm not kidding.

The columns didn't line up perfectly.  First column is wins.

In the first few moves, tempo is going to change a lot so I don't think it really matters.

I understand the argument of knowing an opening but I'm pretty sure with just good thought you can yield a strong opening even if you're unfamiliar with a line.

I'm kinda divided on the subject, I mean, I seem to play stronger as white but I just love hip hop and soul food so much...

Actually, truth be told, I play an equally bad game regardless...

heckonwheels

White does have a half a move advantage at the beginning of the game. However, I seem to be better at defending in the opening so generally I prefer black.

bigpoison

Black's more fun, but statistically worse.  My stats suggest that I'm equally bad with both.

Hey you guys saying you play better with black need to start playing 1.a3! when you play white. By doing so, you're essentially playing black and your nightmares with playing the dreaded white side will be over. (unless of course black answers with 1.a6!!)

What is wrong with you? you want to control the center, not the sides!!

The_Pyropractor
