However, if you are more familiar with 1. d4 or 1. c4 than your opponents, they are also sound and can be excellent ways to gain an advantage due to the theory you know (and the theory they don't).

No other first move accomplishes as much as 1 e4 with 1 d4 being a close second, after those 2 both 1 c4 and 1 Nf3 are also good opening moves and played a lot.

e3 is the best move. My experience

I prefer e4,d4,c3,kc3 then push right side knight and bishop , castle ,queen protects e4 pawn, castle rook protects d4 pawn. this opening is great for 1600 and less and puts u up to 2 moves ahead , also sacrificing a pawn tho, try it, pretty fun open
