What is the proper response to "gg"?

Sometimes when I win, the opponent replies "gg" in chat.

I really don't know what to say.   I mean, what would I reply?

• "You too"?
• "It certainly was!"?
• "You were valiant and persistent until the very end"?  
• "If you think that's good, you should see me on a good day"?

I just feel awkward when people say "gg".

I think you should just meet gg with gg

Oh, I was kidding about the rude responses to gg or the like when winning.  I don't do that, I just don't say anything.

not replying to 'gg' is considered rude in gaming culture.

in quakecon, quake live finals, when the time was running out for the losing guy and he was several kills behind, he kind of resigned by typing 'gg'. the winner didn't say 'gg' back and it became kind of a big deal and bad sportsmanship.

but then online gaming is famous for rudeness and arrogance so i guess its okay.

What a friggin' waste of time and energy. If it's expected and just a silly ritual, what's the point?  It's meaningless if it isn't spontaneous and heartfelt.  Dishonest, even.  Phony.

Go along to get along is a social intelligence I must not have a high enough IQ for.  I do what I have to in things for the job, interacting with people.  But in blitz?  I don't know.  You seem mellow and smart and I respect you.  I just can't be like that at this point in my life.

Say gg or wp, it's that simple.

What's "wp"?  White pawn?  What's the point?

it's just one of those things you say, like thanks for the game or something like that. but gg is better since thanks for the game can be interpreted as saying, thanks for being slaughtered by me, now let me move to stronger opponents.

gg is more respectful and can be said by the winning or the losing side, though it is more often said by the losing side.

wp is probably 'well played'

I cannot in good conscience and good faith say "gg" or "wp" to someone who played badly, even if they say "gg".  Being dishonest for the sake of some social expectation like that just feels dirty and corrupt.

i don't particularly mind 'gg'. on playchess you have this option of sending 'applause' if you think the opponent played well. that is also kind of nice and always warms me up inside to get applause if i actually played well and the opponent didn't press the button by mistake.

If it's so important for you to stay honest and fair over the internet then you should probably just leave the game and get another one before anyone has the time to type gg or wp.
