What is the purpose of a chess club?

I can see there are millions of clubs on here, people join them and do absolutely nothing most of the time. But, what makes a good chess club? How do you go about setting one up?

Yes, lots of chess.com members join chess.com clubs...but how do you know they "do absolutely nothing most of the time" if you aren't in any clubs yourself?

Some clubs are chess oriented, but most I've come across are simply social groups where people share a common interest or just casually chat with some online friends.

I would never join a club that would have me as a member.

At least you are honest. Would you invite you? ...No. Why should you? grin.png

So... they don't really have a purpose.

How will my life change? What does your club do?

You know what? Sure. If you don't value social interactions or communication with like-minded people, then sure, clubs have no purpose.

For everyone else though, there are clubs for many things including improving your chess...you do care about chess right?

I understand clubs may not be for everyone (busy people with schedules, or little desire to interact with others), but that doesn't mean they wouldn't benefit from club(s) if they were a part of them happy.png

You are allowed to cuss, proselytize, and skewer political idiots in certain clubs. Other clubs gather the ignorant and cultivate their defects. Others consist of people who know each other in real life, …

There are as many reasons for clubs as there are clubs.

Much like your trolling account.

If you're expecting a chess club to change your life, your expectations are way too high, dude.

Vote chess!

Some people may have other reasons too (I'm rather fond of the the team matches between my state and others), but vote chess is the main reason for me, and the one thing that can't be replicated in any other way.

It's a lot of fun, and a great way to learn -- at least if you join a club that takes vote chess seriously and actually has a good discussion every move (rather than everyone just sending in random votes).

My experience with a chess.com club:

Blue Emu appreciation thread - Chess Forums - Page 4 - Chess.com

-------- ---------- -------- -------- -------- ---------- ---------

Months ago, I was invited to join a club here on chess(dot)com. Just an ordinary club, with a name so ordinary that I can't even recall it.

I was already a member of twenty-odd other clubs, and I'm not really a club sort of person... I don't take much part in club activities. But joining is usually simpler than tactfully refusing, so I agreed to join, on the condition that I was not assigned any role or responsibility (such as recruiting or coordinating).

Some time later, the club Admin apparently had a serious problem with the Moderating staff here on chess(dot)com, because he/she changed the club name to "#### all the Moderators especially that little weasel ###Specific Moderator's Name###". He/she also changed the club's profile picture to something offensive.

At the time, I wasn't aware of this because I just ignore almost all of my clubs, and don't even glance at the messages and alerts that I get from them.

Then he got banned, or closed his account... leaving the club without an owner or Admin. The chess(dot)com software Bot doesn't allow this... every club must have an owner and an Admin.

So the Bot picked a new owner/Admin. Guess who got picked? Probably because of my 2012 join date, which presumably put me at the top of the list of candidates.

I was still blissfully unaware of all this, because the Bot had NOT asked me "Do you want to be the new Owner/Admin of 'Club With Obscene and Offensive Name (Y/N)?". It just assigned the club to me, without any Y/N prompt.

Then somebody... a Mod?... a Bot?... some random person visiting my profile?... noticed that I was the Owner and Admin of what was obviously some sort of nasty Hater's club.

The rest you know. I was kicked out of Community Defenders, and banned from the chess(dot)com website.

I could probably have straightened it all out fairly quickly by creating an alt account... The_Ghost_Of_Blue_Emu, perhaps... but I hadn't yet done anything wrong (as I saw it) and I was reluctant to violate the ToS with a multi-account.

So I just stayed Banned, contacted Support by e-mail, and waited it out. It took four days.

Basically... a case of mistaken identity. I got "actioned" instead of the perpetrator, because the perpetrator was gone and I had inherited the mess.

I already host a couple of clubs, like an extra master one, so join if u can .
