What is the value of the king?

The king can't be taken away from the board, so both kings are always present on the board, and it doesn't matter what value one assigns to the king: there is always parity between the two players in this regard. Overall, the king is great at defending in the middlegame and at attacking in the endgame, but he is also an easy target, so his strengths are double-edged.

Okay, I think most of us know that there are always to kings on the board :-). We are not talking here about the value of the king to be able to exchange it favourable with another figure - so we do even not mention this in the present discussion. The thread is about how strong a king, and the question is almost only relevant concerning endgame, especially when queens are traded. The king will attack and support pawns and figures, and in this function (because it can move in all directions and cannot be attacked by the other king) it has the value of ca. 4 pawns. This value is given by strong theoreticians and GMs.

When I had my first coaching lesson my coach said :

King value is indefinite

However, in computer programs the king only needs to have a value greater than the sum of all other pieces.

The Mann or Commoner.

A man is approximately equal in strength and value to a knight, generally.

The mann reaches its peak strength during the endgame, in which its value is slightly more than a knight, despite being slightly less than a knight in the opening.

That being said the King and non-royal equilavent piece share many similarities. However the King suffers from royality but reverence compensate somewhat for that handicap.

I just kidnapped your king.  You want him back in OK condition, right?  How much in Bitcoins are you willing to send me to make this happen?  That's his value.

King is said to be worth 10 points BUT I think that its value is infinite as if we capture the king, the evening is ours

devtheron

The value of the king, is its position.

Since its value is so little, why not simply sacrifice your king early in the game?

The value of the king is relative, because it is the value of the entire game. To some people it can vary, because of how much they are willing to resign or not. There's not a real way to place a value of a king unless you sort of believe it is worth something. The king is invaluable to an entire game, and that's why when you're about to be mated, it says mate in n instead of -100.

The Value of my King is about $2.89....

In variant chess we often use a "guard" which is a non-royal king. When the guard is played with the other normal chess pieces, its value is almost exactly the same as a bishop or knight (3 points).

But we have plenty of other pieces too, and nobody know the value of pieces such as the grim-reaper, zombie, or ball.meh.png

(The left-most piece is the guard):

What do you think the value of the king should be?

The king is invaluable.  The values that are assigned the other pieces serve only one purpose and that is to give beginners an idea of their relative strengths.  So a beginner knows it's fine to trade his knight for a bishop but not his rook.  But as any experienced player knows, those values are just general guides.  Trading one's 9-point queen for a 1-point pawn is a great deal if it results in a forced mate.

Depends on what it is made out of. If it's a normal plastic one, I would say a few cents, unless you count all the shipping fees and etc. Marble ones and such will usually be worth a lot more.

FBloggs: i disagree.

Here the King is disguised as dark squared bishop. The dark squared bishop got captured earlier in the game. So the King steps in as a substitute. In this case the King is worth about 3 point.

In the endgame, when the danger of checkmate has passed, the King has a fighting strength intermediate between Rook and minor piece... say, about four points.

Huh? If the danger of checkmate has passed, then the players should agree to a draw.meh.png

I have heard from various sources that if the king were a regular piece it would have a value of four pawns, somewhere between a bishop and a rook.

I have hear it said, that a king is worth between 5 to 7 points, in the endgame.

Very improtant to get that thing active.
