Checkmate.
What is the worst way to lose at chess?

One thing that happened to me (Not in a tournament, just a chess practice)
I was going to checkmate my opponent (I had about minute on the clock but he one second) so I did. But then he said ''ILLEGAL MOVE'' (It was check)
= lost game!

When your opponent makes a lot of minor mistakes, but you lose because of one big mistake at the end.

what?
First of all you shouldn't announce "checkmate" out loud, you should just do it. Second if you do an illegal move you don't lose the game, you just get a small time penalty (where I play is 2 mins in the opponent's clock).

The worst possible way to lose at chess is by being a 36758 player and lose to a... pigeon? Nevermind, I'll just shut down my engine that calculates the worst possible ways of doing specific things.
Or maybe... The worst possible way to lose at chess is if you don't play and still lose.

Holy Moly! i should try that! OH MY i would get so mad if that happened to me haha i never so fools mate before :D

here is what happened to me recently. Playing 15 minute per side games.
One particular player accused me of using a chess engine and after that our games were hard fought.
Most recent game, he played a gambit and I accepted the pawn and gradually came to a better end game. Then 40 seconds left and I have a mate in 4. But I never do well in time trouble even though I saw the mate.
Made the first move of the 4 but my hand trembling and I lost about 10 seconds. My opponent replied immediately.
Made 2nd move again 10 seconds. 3rd move 10 seconds and now a mate in 1 with 10 seconds to go! I started to make the move and my hand slipped.
Started again and again a slip of the mouse I was holding. Then I pick up my queen and started to move it....
I lost on time! He had 4 pawns left which was sufficient mating material.
I was less than 1/2 second away from the mate in one.

Worse way to lose?
I remember this incident. Black was losing and kept playing on needlessly. He was finally checkmated. At the end of the game, he didn't do anything except whisper to his opponent (but loud enough for everyone else to hear), "F@ck you".
He briefly made a fist and was about to knock over the pieces but realized it would have probably been considered very bad sportsmanship and left the table without signing the scoresheet or shaking his opponent's hand. And of course, didn't help put away the pieces. It was his set!
