What is with people not giving rematches?

I consider it rude to not give a rematch. I dont even ask anymore because people usually dont give it and its dissapointing to see "rematch declined".

What is going through people's heads. Why so much denying?

MrEdCollins

Maybe their cat needs attention.  Maybe they have to go use the bathroom.  Maybe this was their last game and they just don't have time for another game.  Maybe the doorbell rang.  Maybe their phone rang.  Maybe their dinner is ready.  Maybe their favorite television show is about to start.  Maybe it's their bedtime.  Maybe they want to analyze the game they just played before starting another one.

Do you get the idea?  There could be hundreds of valid reasons why a person doesn't give you a rematch, none of which would be considered rude.

tylersloeper

Im not convinced. too many people play this game back to back. and when any of those things happen, people go and then come back.

There was a time everyone gave rematches, and now no one does. Is it the community? is it me? What's going on.

Please lay off the personal assault. I want to know why no one gives rematches anymore.

Read that again OP.

I have no reason but mood.  When playing mood may or may not determine whether a rematch is accepted or not.  I very very rarely ask for a rematch.  The reasoning is that I am here to play and play a lot and if my opponents are here to play and play a lot then over time we will meet again.

Between games I sometimes need to catch my breath.  Especially if the game was hard fought.  There is no slight meant or intended.  Most of the time I've already clicked on new game and your rematch request is lost since I'm already playing someone else.

In other words:  Worry not and play.

There are two likely reasons why. They can't or they don't want to. For possible reasons why they can't or don't want to, please see MrEdCollins post #2. There are probably hundreds of other reasons in addition to those he listed. Maybe we should start a "1000 Reasons People Don't Give Remathes" thread to use as a reference

You know I'll be honest and say I personally always feel best leaving as a winner.. And giving a rematch is a new opportunity to lose if you already won. I'd imagine that's most often the reason for not rematching if I may be blunt. And before you hate on me, I would try to be polite and rematch if asked for despite however I might feel about it :p it would be bad manners to leave for that reason I think. It's also true though that people can have a lot of other legitimate reasons to to leave the table, so to speak.

Thanks chungle. Sounds reasonable.

Maybe they only wanted to play one game.  Maybe they think someone that feels like they need "revenge" or a a chance to "even the score" is taking the game personally and doesn't want to play with people like that.  Maybe they have had one too many people miraculously play 1000x better in the second game, suspiciously so.

I don't give rematches in rated games.  Sometimes I will in an unrated game because I know some like it even though I don't.  I do that purely for the other person.

I know that some people play chess more from their instincts, but I am a deep calculator (in standard, I use an average of 3 minutes for 1 minute off my opponents clock) and I can confirm that after any chess game, standard or blitz, I simply need a break to get up and stretch. Sometimes I will be frustrated after a blitz game and hit "new game" right away almost reflexively, but the main time control I play is standard and in my opinion doing two standard games back to back with no break is just suicide. If you look through my games, you can see that I often don't have the endurance to last through one game, let alone two. I will crush my opponent with extremely accurate moves as a result of deep, and tiring, calculation, then hang a piece or get back rank mated. This is why I limit myself to one standard game a day, period. If I have more energy or more time that I want to spend on chess, I devote it to analysis or blitz games.

But I think wanting a break is a huge reason why people don't accept rematches. Even if people play multiple games in a row, it's very possible you just happen to be the person at the end of one of their sittings.

What is it with people expecting/demanding rematches?

Because they want a rematch, and not giving them one is clearly a personal affront

Erik_29

Sometimes I rematch sometimes I won't. Maybe I'm done playing maybe I want a smoke break maybe I have to take a dump and don't want to play with you while doing so maybe I have a life that doesn't revolve around giving some stranger a rematch just because they feel entitled to one. There are thousands of people playing here at any given moment go play one of them.

It's a race to see who can get checkmated and click rematch first

You have to defend yourself hence a World Champion defending his title. This mode of thought should be in all chess player's blood. It's shocking about people's attitude towards a rematch.

I never, ever, decline a rematch. A one-win wonder or loss doesn't prove anything. But yes, I agree with the above, there are times when you need to dash, however, the usual culprits run for the hills at the sniff of a rematch.

First off, it is not our responsibility to give you a rematch, and it's not rude to decline a rematch.  There are many reasons I don't give a rematch:

1) I don't have time - many times I go to play 1 game to kill 10 minutes, and then need to take care of other stuff

2) My opponent played some BS system - I have zero interest in playing BS chess - when I play Blitz, I'm working on my openings.  Not talking about anti-lines, like the Anti-Grunfeld (i.e. 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.f3), that's fine, can face it in tournament competition, but if you play something like 1.h4, you aren't getting a rematch, no matter what the result is.

3) My opponent toggles to win on time.  I had a game where I had a Rook and a pawn and my opponent had a Rook, zero win chances, and it was dead drawn (he easily has Philidor's Draw).  I try to offer a draw down 24 seconds to 17 seconds.  He declines and toggles me out of time.  I got two words for you if you pull that BS.  F*** YOU!  No way in hell you get a rematch!

did hitler ask the allies for a rematch?

Ah another person who thinks that their way of thinking must be adopted by all people even on the most mundane of details. People like you are dangerous, especially when they get in positions of power, in politics, business or religion. I am happy you are just on the chess.com forums where you can do no real harm.

Fortunately, I don't do propaganda.  I only speak the truth.
