By mainstream, I mean popular in the top 10 or top 20, such as soccer (football), cricket, baseball, basketball, golf, etc.
I would say American football is most like chess. If you are familiar with the sport, there are linemen that are like 'pawns' (no offense to any high school or college linemen out there), a quarterback who is like the 'queen' other technical positions which are like the rooks, knights, and bishops and the head coach is like the 'king' who determines the strategy to be used and designs plays.
In American football there are several distinct positions and the players of these positions do not look alike at all. A lineman might be quite big and husky where a wide receiver might be tall, skinny, and fast. And a placekicker or running back might be quite short. They all have different skills based on the position they play, similar to the different ways different chess pieces move.
