Let me start answering the second question : most aggressive attacking style in history : Alekhine, Tal, Kasparov ( as per 1993 ).

And in defining the style of the four players, one can use words like  1) natural genius,  2) practical player,  3) tournament player,  4) match player,  5) positional player,   6) tactical player,  7) best strategist,  8) attacking,  9) aggressive,  10) blundering,  11) reckless  12) impressive,  13) careful,  14) fast play or  time trouble 15) intuition,  16) experienced, 17) unpretentious,  18) lots of fantasy,  19) irrational, 20) optimist or pessimist,  21) quiet or nervous, 22) simplifying or hindering, 23) accurate or careless, 24) alert or not, 25) taking risk,  26) patient,  27) better in openings or just in endings, 28) combinatoir,  29) gambit player, 30) efficient or beautifying, 31) concentrated or fast diverted...

How interesting is chess ( and psychology )  ! ! !

I hope lots of people will answer this question for the four mentioned players.

@ aatkins : yes, style has been discussed before, but now ( april 2013 ) it is correct to compare these four players.

Just today we will know whether Kramnik or Carlsen will meet Anand.

Have a look on the hundreds of reactions on their play in London, right now !    Everybody has a different opinion about them.

Anand, as far as I know anyway, is a universal player.  Carlsen is said to be in the line of Capablanca and Karpov.  Positional player / endgame virtuoso.

As for question two, I have to throw Nezhmetdinov's name in here for most aggressive attacking player... so much so that he didn't have consistent results because he attacked even when it didn't quite work.  He beat world champions though, not just a mindless attacker like coffee house players can be.

They play the best move for the position, whether that is attack, defence, or preparing for a better end game. It seems pointless to talk about style.

All of them are universal players but they do have preferences.

Carlsen-Positional player with a knack for grinding out endgames.Prefers to avoid theory which sometimes backfire as his opponent will get a superior position out of the opening. This is compensated by his strong intuition, tenacious defensive ability and his excellent time management.

Kramnik-the amalgamation of Kasparov and Karpov. He has a very strong positional understanding combined with an amazing depth of calculation. He has  a very compact repertoire which is geared on knowing more information than his opponent.Popularized the Catalan and the granite Berlin wall.He is also known as a KID slayer.White is sort of  his sword in scoring in tournaments while Black is his mostly just for shield. This causes problems when he needs to win with Black as the super GMs are very capable of sterilizing the Berlin wall into a draw.So in a must win scenario he resorts to an improvised Sicilian like his game with Anand in the WCC.

Aronian-the most tactical player out of the four, always setting "tricks" over the board without compromising the position that much.In a superior position he will often play the most aesthetically pleasing move.Very classical in his choice of openings.Plays an "agressive d4" with white.Displayed brilliant wins with the Marshall attack with black, since then the Marshall has been very respected, and is just mostly avoided by white.Prefers to play classical QGD or Slav and will rarely venture into hyper modern openings like KID against d4.

Anand-.I assume he has the most intensive opening preparation out of the four.At his best, his tactical prowess  rivals Kasparov.Im not sure how I will evaluate his play at this moment as he seems to be on the decline.he seems to blunder alot at this point of his career and he seems to be content on just drawing. This is a syndrome that has affected alot of WC though like Petrosian, and Kramnik before him

Who is the most agressive tactical player in history?Nezhmetdinov,Kasparov,Tal in that order
