I don/t want to lose my rating points (I have like 800 now) so what is there to do to ensure I win? If i have more points but my timer runs out first what happens? Do i just need to keep an eye on the screen just in case my opponent decides to come back for those 20 straight minutes? What ratings do you guys have?

It’s called stalling and you should report it. Stalling violates fair play and is punishable.

Well, usually if he does not make a move in a certain time, a countdown of a minute or less (depending on the type of game) will start. When the countdown hits zero and he still hasn’t moved he forfeits the game. If that is not case you just need to keep an eye on the game while doing something else until the time runs out (when the opponent moves there should be a sound as well so you can do something else in the meantime)

Not sure what time controls you are playing, but I play a lot of 15/10.  There are instances when there are connection issues or times when the opponent may take a long time to move.  I have also taken a long time to calculate when I am in a bad situation.  I have only played a couple hundred games, but I just chill and wait.  I haven't run into a lot of stallers other than sometimes toward the very end when I am about to mate and they choose to lose on time other than by mate.  Grab a snack, use the restroom, pet the dog or cat, check your phone or whatever.

You should ALWAYS report the player. If it was a connection issue or some weird happenstance, nothing will happen.

If it happens a couple of times there is no punishment so a report doesn’t hurt so you don’t have to worry. If they player is violating fair play, then the report helps to establish a pattern of behavior.

So always report.

I sometimes get bored and leave but honestly I'm just scared for my chess.com account because I don't remember resigning and I think I may get reported or banned... (I hope not)

There used to be a resignation clock that would appear after a player did not make a move after a period of time. It seems as though, it has been cancelled for some reason.

My thought is players resort to stalling hoping you will quit or disconnect. I also think they may be seeking advice or consulting an engine, when they are in a difficult situation. I truly hope that isn’t the case. Reporting them no longer seems to help anymore.

I played a game a while ago where my opponent made two moves after the opening and then didn’t make a move for another 15 minutes. Anyway, it’s very frustrating and should be addressed.

Just report the people who do it
