- Massive amounts of studying before-hand, and I don't mean 2 hours of cramming, I mean weeks upon weeks of preparation.
- Keep your mind where it belongs. At the board. Don't be getting up after every move. Avoid talking nonsense to friends during the game about things like video games, where you are going to eat afterwards, how much of a loser your opponent is, big breasts, etc.
- Forget about trying to eat during the game. Eat between rounds. You can also be required to take it out of the tournament hall and eat it at another spot, monitored by a director. There goes time off your clock.
- Get a decent night sleep each night (in the case of multi-day events).
- Focus, and even when you leave the table, take a mental snapshot of your position and be thinking about it while you are going to the restroom or observing another game. Always keep your own game in mind at all times until game's end!
What to do while playing chess tournament ?

1. Caffeine. My minimum is five cups of coffee and a caffeine pill crushed and mixed into eyedrops I use throughout the tournament.
2. Tight pants. It's a constant squeezy reminder to keep me focused and makes it difficult to wander far.
3. Shave your eyebrows. Those things only get in the way and give your opponents clues about your plans.
4. Make devil horns with your hand after each of your moves. Psychology is an important factor in the War of the 64 Squares.

I move my lips without uttering a sound while rubbing invisible prayer beads between my fingers, all the while staring fixedly at my opponents queen. If you really focus and don't blink tears will start running down your face. Place a cup under your face and let the tears drop into it.Draw arcane symbols on your notation paper and then pour the tears over it before slowly eating the paper. Keep your left arm limp and when you want to move a piece pick up your limp left arm with your right and position it by the piece you want to move then push the piece to the appropriate square using your limp left hand. Always make sure the piece ends up between two or more squares.

Count out loud "ONE...TWO...ONE" whenever you move one of your Knights, as if you've only just learned how the pieces move. This will lull your opponent into a false sense of security
On a more serious note, you might want to get used to the colour and type of sets and boards they are likely to use at the tournament before you go. And make sure you've got some water, unless they provide it. You probably also want to make sure you know the correct rules about how you offer draws and claim draws for 3-fold repetition etc
