@Dodger111
Even the average 13-year old who is rated is still well under 1000. I was 900 and I think that's about average for someone who played as much as I did.

Dont forget that Otb strenght of 1100 is very much better than 1100 online, a 1100 player would be between 1300 and 2000 online. Thats how it is in Oslo, Norway
I am actually 12, and I am rated 1350 with many strengths and weaknesses. (Opening = Strength, endgame=weakness). But overall, I would say the average rating for an average 13 year old chess player is 950-1250.
Gary Kasparov also played a 13 year old at 1700+ level, and made a draw. That was in Reykjavik, and the kid was Magnus Carlsen.
Thats a lie. Carlsen would have been WAY past 1700 by 13 years old. In fact, I got to 1800 when I was 12. Does that make me better than the world champ?
You are right. In fact if i am correct carlsen was a GM by 13 years old

you are absolutly right, in fact Carlsen actually mangaged to beat Antololy Karpov!! but the statment that Carlsen drew Kasparov at 13 although true is not as impressive as it seems because Kasparov beat him, and was the one who advanced (i think it was a knockout, not posotive though), so it really doesn't have that much behind it in my opinion
I work in a dozen different middle schools, over the past 15 years I have played countless games against 13 year olds during lunch. They are pathetic. The English language doesn't have the words to adequately describe how sucky the average 13 year old plays chess. I can typically spot them a queen and win easily. They are like retarded. ONE time I played an 8th grader who played OK, that's out of many thousands of games.
(kleeof) If you put those skills toward picking locks, you could make more money than chess, juggling and rubiks put together.
....and remember, crime pays (if you don't get caught) [....and don't you worry about a thing my darling - think of the lock-picking skills you'll have to break out !]

I know 13 year old's who could beat you 100-0 easily, in fact i know 13 years who could likely beat you 100-0 blindfolded (all judged by your chess.com rating). that said i do know that many 13 year olds are less then good, and play horriblly.
You are right all of you. The average 13 year old isnt skilled at all in chess, and there are 13 year old players that impress everybody, but those skilled ones are talents that has chosen to do a great long term effort to improve in chess.
About how impressive Magnus was as a back in Reykjavik. He didnt do a tournament with many victories, but he played bigger and stronger players. Kasparov probably was testing out an odd line, and got punished.
But Magnus might have been the best thirteen year old kid in the world at that time, and today he is the best adult, better than the kids.
I am a member of one of Norways 10 strongest chessclubs (Nordstrand), with around 100 members. The highest rated 13 year old ones in our club are close to Fide 2000 and also are national youth team players.
I think that a 1300 Fide player is a good player , regardless of age, because I probably am close to that level myself, and I know that it takes a lot of talent and some work. If you dont think that is strong, then challenge me. For a 13 year old, 500 is an ok start, 1300 is good. 2000 is brilliant and 2300 is world class.
danielzhang, I disagree with you. If a 13 year old is at the same level as you, that is very , very good. I am 52, and I am at your level, and I am very satisfied if playing equal with the superstrong 9 year old players. I think 13 year old players should be very happy too if they can play on your level.
As I said before. Age isnt making the big difference, but the total amount of time focused on chess does make a difference.
thanks for telling me
Age has nothing to do with it. It depends on many things. Depends what entourage do you live in, how much time have you been playing for, if you actually study theory, tactics etc. or just play for fun, depends on what do you want to achieve, etc.
Without knowing all those things, there is no such thing as an ideal rating for a 13 year old.
I think it will be very hard for me to improve without a coach, books. All i have to improve is chess.com and i will try my best to improve with experience maybe....
There is plenty of free material in the internet that you can use to improve a lot.
There are even many chess books that you can download for free.
I think that unless you want to become a very serious chess player and win tournaments and all that stuff, you don't need a chess coach. You can achieve a fairly good level with books. And if you can buy some good chess software like Fritz, it will be very helpful.
It all depends on who you ask. Probably to get GM you need at least 2050 by the time you are 13. Average rating is probably around 1350.
I got 3 year to improve by 800 point lol
Franklin, you got more time than that. Dont think so much about rating. Play games, have fun.
I am 52 years and nonrated in Fide, maybe its to late for me to go for GM. Maybe not. I do not know. But a kids1 10-15 years , they have chances, even from a below 700 Fiderating.
I don't know the things in India. I only know China. Some 13 years old Chinese can beat computer4-impossible in a 5 minute blitz easily. Many of them learned chess for about 10 years. But most of the amateur players are very weak.

I downloaded My system and looking forward to read it.Also do you think i can improve maybe to a 1400 rated player within one year?
13 can be a strange age to be, chess, well 1000-1200, i suppose, but it depends.
