well today is your lucky day. You have been offers 50,000 dollars to do just that. Play your favorite player in a match. What would you do with the money? would you be nervous? would you be thrilled? would this be the chance you always dreamed of?
What would you do?
First, I'd be spending a little to buy clean undies because that much 'soil' just won't wash out and there will be more; Next I'd be spending (minus $2000 (for me!)) whatever left after taxes to hire some 'much better than me "online chess gurus" players to prepare me to at least get me to move 20...I'll sleep like a baby for YEARS, just on the sweet memories: I lasted 20 moves before I was exposed as a 'gone guru'

I would be looking to see if someone pinned a "kick me" sign on my butt.
If you've read discussions about how 2600 players would do against today's top GM's you'd've picked up by now that the sentiment is that a 2600 player is small potatoes in the upper stratosphere of chess. A 2000 player is dirt.
1600-1700 range? Manure fertilizer at best for growing small potatoes.
Get rational son, it's just a game that unfortunately will bring you nothing but sadness and self-loathing if you don't adjust your thinking to be more in tune with reality.
You probably have better chances to become the next LeBron James by practicing shooting baskets eight hours a day.
I know it hurts but sooner or later you are going to have to accept the facts of life. Taking it too seriously is the recipe for pain given the mediocrity of your attainment in ten years of trying.
I'm sorry for being such pr__k but you asked the question and I cannot tell a lie.

I would look you straight in the eye and go
Uhuhuhuh, uhuhuhuh, uh, you said wood.
Actually, I think I wouldn't get the opportunity. You would advise against reinterring Tal in the pet cemetery, right?
OK now in all seriousness, if any gm today offered me a game I would probably play. If magnus lost to one of us online players, any win is possible vs a high rated player.

Louis, Relax; Guy doesn't have much to do and apparently didn't get 'the spirit in which your post was made' (also seemed to miss idea that I saw): Your dream comes true- game against one of the best (in any field in which you have interest)...Thoughts? I NEVER jumped to conclusion from ANY of your piece, that you 'saw yourself besting a Carlsen in that Dream Game', any more more than I would 'best' Michael Jordan in a one-on-one game at a basketball court, but it would be a 'once in a lifetime event you'd never forget and savor all your lifetime; And I'd TRY to give Jordan 'a game'

what are you hoping to get out of this. I would be ecstatic just to play my favorite. player of all time Kasparov for the thrill of actually playing him.
I don't get it. Why would that make you ecstatic? He'd chew you up and spit you out like garbage. What would be the point? Have you ever played a really good player OTB? When they are so good that for them it's like playing blitz while you ponder forever your next move that they simply instantaneously respond to. There is nothing about it that feels good. You are something that got stuck on the bottom their shoe and its humiliating to be the reason they have to wipe their feet.
Louis, Apparently he can write but he can't read; don't let him ruin a good post, block him, delete his posts; Dopp- Get a life!

Louis,
I tend to go a little hyperbolic sometimes in my responses to people. I don't really want to make you feel worse. Have you seen the video of when Kasparov was played to a draw by Magnus when Magnus was 12? Kasparov gave him no respect at all. Appeared to be disdainful he was playing what he regarded as an inferior and if I recall correctly didn't even offer a handshake or acknowledgement when he hastily left the board at the finish.
I loved Kasparov as a chess player when he was on top and was despondent for a week when he lost to Deep Blue. But I'm pretty sure if circumstances had somehow found me playing against him, the experience would have been very unpleasant and possibly mostly because of the damage to my respect for him that would be unavoidable.

For years you have eat, sleeper, and breathed chess. You are an online chess guru. You follow your favorite chess hero's games always dreaming that one day you will play a match.
