i wouldnt pay anything, and if i were a gm i would not charge people to play me
What would you pay to play a GM in an OTB Tournament?

On the one hand, that'd be ideal, but on the other hand, it is good that we have professional chess-players.
As for me in my modest position, no, not yet. I'm not close enough to their standards to really benefit from it.

Its not worth paying for. You can be lucky to play GMs in big tours. In Copenhagen Open players around 1900 get to play players 2600 players. And in the blitz tournement, there is a big chance playing a GM or at least a IM. This year I played GM Emanuel Berg in blitz, hes over 2600.

Context SimonSeirup. People in North America cannot just play the GM who lives next door, and if he is busy then play the one two doors down.

How would you put food on the table?
Nigel Short and Alexei Shirov support themselves by selling simul games.

If people pay for nothing games why would they not pay for real games?

I saw Joel Benjamin in the movie Game over Kasparov and the machine. He denounced Kasparov which I thought was harsh. I would not like to play him or meet him.

I would play a real game
Magnus Carlsen has a second job to supplement his income from chess. Are you saying you would earn more money from tournament chess than Carlsen?

no im just saying i would do the same thing, have a second job as an engeneer, or maybe get good enough at the guitar so that i am a rock star haha that would be cool, but seriously i would be an engeneer also or some other job

Nothing. Except for Day and Bluvstein, I can play the rest for the price of an entry fee when the Marshall Chess club holds a major tournament.

You pay for the doc , lawyer , accountant, garbage remover etc , why not a great chess player, just insist he chat , maybe tell u what u did wrong , what does it cost ?

I would play a real game

Stop making things up, Carlsen doesn't have a second job.

"Players from any section will be able to buy a round 1 game with a GM, IM, or WGM. Prices and rules are still under review and will be posted shortly."
Currently the participants in the 2012 Canadian Open Chess Championship are not known. Surely Magnus will not be there.
Here are some from 2011. http://www.canadianchess.info/2011canadianopen/stars
Without saying these will be in the 2012 version, and without saying there will be an auction of specific players, what would be your bid for:
GM Mark Bluvshtein
GM Joel Benjamin
GM Benjamin Finegold
IM Irina Krush
IM Lawrence Day
WIM Iryna Zenyuk

Edit: Please keep an open mind about this new way to attract participants and GMs. (Assuming the titled players get a cut or even all of the amount.)
What would Sam Shankland (not a GM at the time) have paid to play a GM to possibly earn a FIDE recognized norm? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJbgI6mehY4 Just an example, in practice FIDE frowns upon messing with the pairings.

Edit #2: Okay simul payers, give it up. How much did you pay and would you pay the same to play that player in an OTB tournament game.
